CAMERA on Campus Launches #FaceTheTruth Campaign to Commemorate October 7th Attacks by Hamas Terrorists

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 27th, 2024 — CAMERA on Campus has announced the launch of its #FaceTheTruth campaign to mark the one-year anniversary of the October 7th attacks on Israel by Hamas. This campaign aims to honor the victims, raise awareness of the ongoing threat of terrorism, and combat misinformation surrounding the tragic events.

“Our goal with #FaceTheTruth is to remind the world of the brutality of these attacks and to ensure that the facts are not distorted,” said Sasha Chernyak, CAMERA on Campus social media manager. “We will be focusing on educational efforts that challenge the disinformation surrounding the conflict, especially on college campuses, where students are often subjected to biased narratives.”

The attacks, carried out by Hamas, a designated terrorist organization, left 1,200 people dead, thousands more wounded, and resulted in the captivity and torture of 251 innocent people taken into Gaza by Hamas.

In the aftermath of Hamas’ brutal Oct. 7th assault on Israel, college campuses became a new front line in the battle for the safety and security of the Jewish people in Israel and in diaspora.

“Columbia was at the forefront of the nation’s attention last academic year. Not because of academics, but because of pro-Hamas students sowing chaos and spreading extreme rhetoric. This campaign comes at an important crossroads where my peers must choose between barbarism and liberal Western values,” said Eli Gelb, a Columbia University senior and 2024-2025 CAMERA Fellow.

CAMERA on Campus intends to use the campaign as a platform to amplify the voices of survivors, share their stories, and dispel the flagrant denialism, attempted justification, and unbridled Jew-hatred exhibited by Students for Justice in Palestine, Faculty for Justice in Palestine, Jewish Voice for Peace, and their affiliates.

“Anti-Israel demonstrators are sadly nothing new at Rutgers and campuses across the United States, but in the aftermath of Oct. 7th, many students and groups felt emboldened by the terror and rushed to claim the narrative, turning evil Hamas terrorists into innocent victims. #FaceTheTruth gives us valuable tools to fight back and reclaim the narrative.”

“As we approach the anniversary, it’s vital that we remember the lives lost and the dangers posed by groups like Hamas and their apologists on campus,” said Hali Spiegel, campus director for CAMERA. “This campaign is not just about commemoration, but ensuring that those spreading hate on campus are held accountable.”

Through #FaceTheTruth, CAMERA on Campus will be organizing events and on-campus discussions with survivors of October 7th, executing a social media campaign, and getting physical resources into the hands of students to educate their peers from the classroom to the quad. “We encourage students, faculty, and the broader community to participate and help confront the growing wave of anti-Israel sentiment with facts,” Spiegel continued.
